An excellent essay by Don Angelo Falcon. I would recommend as a start changing the name of the Puerto Rican Hispanic Legislative Task Force to Hispanic (or Latino) Legislative Task Force. Once Intro 410 passes next year (and it is expected to pass) there will be many Latinos eligible to vote in the municipal elections every four years. Its time to work under a name that begins not with a specific group but one that represents us a people united in language, culture, challenges, and opportunities. As a Latino that has worked in the nonprofit, public, and private sectors, currently as a small business owner, I would like to see a major emphasis on Hispanic entrepreneurship. Id like a major push by advocacy groups to get Latino businesses certified as MBE with the federal, state, and city government. Id like to see joint ventures amongst these businesses. Trust is a major factor in this--getting into business with others can be a roll of the dice, but with proper vetting, and oversight by The Task Force and good government and advocacy groups like the National Institute for Latino Policy (NiLP), maybe these trust issues can be minimized. Just my dos centavos!
