An excerpt from my undergrad section on Hobbes: Hobbes’ Leviathan (1651/1982) proved a controversial piece of work upon its release. Hobbes was controversial because he questioned this notion that human beings are somehow naturally civilised. Left to their own devices, Hobbes believed, human beings would self-destruct in a wash of chaos and violence. Hobbes’ famous ‘war of all against all’ was a dystopic view of an enraged and wild population brutally engaged in personal survival and the fulfillment of its unrestrained passions.
