An excerpt from one of the chapters of my book ReInventing MySelf, - TopicsExpress

An excerpt from one of the chapters of my book ReInventing MySelf, and a sadly beautiful song sung by Tony Bennet. I stumble upon them as if by some mysterious coincidence. How do they all go together? I dont know really, only that one seems to attract and connect to the other. Something to share and excuse to listen to the song again. The following is from the chapter in my book called The Big Gray Silence: Next, I go upstairs to my dentist, God bless him, who sings a little, who has been known to whistle and hum, and who also talks to me while he works. So, he says, how are you doin? and I say, Fine, its better this year. Ive been taking these solitary walks in the middle of the night alone, and I reach this spot where I can look at the stars and stare at the moon over the cornfield and repair my sanity. There is an expression on the face of my dentist that I havent seen before when I am saying this. Its like the look on a boys face the very first time he rides a bicycle by himself without falling off. In the eyes of my dentist, for a moment or two, I imagine Norman Rockwell, W.O. Mitchell, Stephen Leacock, and Mark Twain, and maybe...Hemingway. Its as if I have said to him, There is this freshwater pond in the prettiest grove of trees, and there arent any manmade sounds or signs in the whole place...and in the early-morning sunlight, or at twilight, or in the dark...you drop your fishing line in the water, and it doesnt matter if the trout or the bass bite, because there is this...something else, something old and grand and silent...and it takes hold of your line...and catches you! And you want it to hold you...forever. Then his assistant comes in to tell him that the other patients are waiting, and Rockwell, Mitchell, Leacock, Mark Twain and Hemingway fade from his eyes.
