An excerpt that might not survive: For a literal-minded child - TopicsExpress

An excerpt that might not survive: For a literal-minded child trying to make sense of his world, our cultural fairy stories (Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, etc.) had a dangerous effect. I came to believe that the world was magical. This is really not a safe or healthy thing to believe. Children, perhaps especially atypical children, should be encouraged to think scientifically. But more importantly, a child who thinks magic is real is at a potentially deadly disadvantage when interacting with a world that runs purely on physics. I expected to be able to fly, if I said the right words or jumped right. I expected that my wishes would come true through sheer force of will. I expected to be able to make deals with the Devil.
