An experience with Don Van Vliet just popped into my mind. We were walking down Sunset Blvd, early evening, just before Sunset. Kama Sutra was paying for a room for us at the famed Sunset Towers. It was an odd time -- post Monterey Pop Festival. Everything was in limbo. I had no idea what was going to happen next. I started thinking about etiquette involving walking with a woman and asked Don if he knew whether a man should escort a woman by standing on the street side or the building side and then told him the two opposing stories Id heard. First of all, you have to be old enough to understand that this was just at the the end of the era when men had been trained to protect women. Anyway, the opposing stories: One: The man should walk on the outside to protect the woman from mud and water splashed by passing vehicles. Two: The man should walk on the inside of the woman to protect her from falling flower pots on window ledges. ( Yep, I heard that!) Anyway, we never did really make a decision which was right, but I suddenly said, Hey! Flower Children and Pot! Flower Pot would be a good name for a song! So the title was born!
