An explosion and fire at the Georgia Power Co. substation on - TopicsExpress

An explosion and fire at the Georgia Power Co. substation on Veterans Memorial Parkway and U.S. Highway 301 South early this morning caused power outages for Georgia Power and Excelsior EMC customers. Here is a statement from Georgia Power: This morning, Georgia Power experienced a critical equipment failure which resulted in a fire at the Statesboro primary substation. In order to repair the equipment and restore complete service to all customers as quickly as possible, Georgia Power will be temporarily interrupting service to some Statesboro area customers today. The temporary, planned outages will be kept as brief as possible (30-45 minutes) and rotated throughout the area. Georgia Power expects this process may continue through early afternoon. The company is working to ensure continuous service to critical infrastructure, such as hospitals, and minimize interruptions to area schools. With the high summer temperatures expected today, Georgia Power also asks that customers reduce their usage as much as possible until this issue is repaired by curtailing non-essential power usage such as clothes dryers and televisions. This reduced usage will help ensure supply for customers. The Statesboro Police Department sent a Nixle alert advising motorists to be alert for inoperable traffic lights and to treat them as four-way stops if they are not working. All of Bulloch County Schools had power by the start of the school day this morning. If power is lost any school, the day will proceed as normal, the school system said in a statement. Our schools are prepared to handle temporary outages, said Hayley G. Greene, the school districts public relations and marketing specialist. We have backup generation to power emergency lighting and alarm systems and our cafeterias always have meal options like cereals for breakfast and sack lunches that dont require cooking. Also our teachers are prepared to teach with or without technology aids. If phone systems are affected, all of our schools are also equipped with 911 radio systems to reach local emergency personnel and administrators have cellular telephones to which calls can be routed. Thank you parents and students for your patience. Thank you as well to our public safety and electric utility personnel for their hard work to resolve this issue. statesboroherald/section/1/article/63118/
