An historic event happened today. The Vermont-Yankee nuclear power plant shut down for the last time. The state of Vermont will no longer be producing tons of nuclear waste every year, no longer adding to the burden of death, mutation, and cancer that is the legacy of every nuclear power plant. We here in Ohio have two nuclear plants that both threaten us with a potential disaster every single day and continue to generate deadly radioactive wastes. We Greens need to take an example from the brave Vermonters who have used every non-violent tactic they could, from letters to the editor, to showing up at hearings, to locking themselves to the plants gates. It took them 16 years, but they won. There is a hearing on January 15. First Energy, the owner of Davis-Besse wants a multi-billion dollar bailout. They want to be able to stick ratepayers directly for an unlimited amount of money for repairs to the plants cracked containment dome and whatever else they want. Please come and tell them, No.
