An image from after the desert campaign shows on LRDG patrol on the deck of caique, a type of Greek fishing boat. These boats became part of what was known the Levant Schooner Flotilla. They were used to move around partisans, the LRDG and other commando units operating in the Aegean. This one has an LRDG patrol on board. The Nazis knew these boats moved Partisans and and commandos about but never banned the use of the boats. Essentially they controlled the smuggling through random searches. The bottom line is the Nazis also needed the fisherman to fish in order to have food so they really couldnt stop them from going to sea! The typical caique was armed with a 20mm Solothurn and two .50 AN-M2s. These were only mounted when the boat was being used for smuggling, and were then hidden unless they were under attack. The caique most often used by the LRDG was LS-8. Another larger fishing boat the La Palma was large enough to carry a fully loaded Jeep on the front deck.
