An important collection of Arthur Machen items in England is in danger of becoming no longer available to the public. Please join me in sending a note to the Newport City Council urging them to keep this gem accessible to all. Heres what I wrote them: While libraries around the world face challenges, to be the holder of record for a collection of one of the most interesting writers of the 19th and 20th centuries--Arthur Machen--adds additional weight to the fate of Newport library services. Arthur Machen was a highly influential writer of fantasy and horror, a predecessor to H.P. Lovecraft, much beloved of writers and film-makers throughout the last century, and renowned to this day for his potent mix of Victorian criticism and extraordinary imagination. Many of our bestselling horror writers--including Stephen King and Peter Straub--owe him a debt of gratitude. As well, his translation of the Memoirs of Casanova is regarded as the finest available in English. I can only hope this collection will remain in a good home, or, if the city council decides to rearrange its libraries, that the Machen collection will be donated to a local university or other facility capable of making the materials available for viewing and reading and scholarship. Sincerely, Greg Bear wormwoodiana.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/arthur-machen-collection-at-risk.html
