An inauspicious end to the Tay salmon season proper! The - TopicsExpress

An inauspicious end to the Tay salmon season proper! The overwhelming sense is of fishing an empty river. First at the grain again today, surprisingly as was late out of bed. A much warmer day than yesterday but nothing showing. Skipped most of the grain, and fished the dyke thoroughly but not a touch. Nice part of setting up was watching the otter work the top of the grain, but even he appeared fishless. Then took my turn at the back of the island, where by 9:30 ever present Colin Bateman had a fish at the top, and Allan Moncur had one at the very tail. Two runs through over came any thoughts of there being any fish with my name on them, since I was without a pull and was losing the mental battle to overcome the thought of the beat being empty! 3:15 I packed up, saying cheerio to several experienced anglers that have never seen it as bad as this before. Fishing, total catch and release continues until the end of the month, but the catching bit is going to be the real challenge! In closing todays update, I am pretty sure that Allan Lumsden was pleased to read my report and find he wasnt mentioned! Well, you dont get off that easily! In a pool which we were all convinced was empty, and the nearest fish was at waulkmill, Allan managed to foul hook a salmon! Only 50 yards down the back of the island he connected with a decent fish, which before he could move was off back to Dundee. It was splashing on the Muirton bank at the top of the Woody Hole and Allan had a virtually empty spool. The backing got a good stretch and all the knots held. All he got back was a mangled hook and a couple of scales! Mr Kettles gripper mantle transfers to Allan! Mentioning Ian, I heard today that after I left he played his third fish of the day, an apparent Malloch contender, but despite bending his LPXe to the limit, the fish had the upper hand and let go after quite a tussle. Unlucky Ian, Luncarty today, maybe you will nail him there.
