An indy supporter sent Margaret Curran an e-mail regarding her stance on TTIP. This was her response:- Thank you for your email. It is clear from the large number of e-mails and letters I have received that there is considerable concern about the Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations. Last Thursday there was a backbench business debate on this in the House of Commons. This is an extremely important issue and I believe the TTIP proposals deserve proper scrutiny at both a UK and EU level. Balanced trade deals can have a positive impact on job creation and the economy and I believe TTIP – an agreement between the US, the world’s largest economy, and the EU, the world’s largest single market – has the potential to bring significant benefits. However, it is important that the final deal is right for Britain and brings tangible benefits for consumers and small businesses. I believe we should only support a deal that fully protects public services – in particular the NHS – and that meets concerns on safety, food and environmental and labour standards. I am also not convinced that the proposed ISDS (Investor State Dispute Settlement) mechanism is either necessary or desirable in its current form and believe there needs to be greater transparency on this. It is welcome therefore that the European Commission has now suspended negotiations on ISDS. I am glad there was a chance for Parliament to debate this important issue last Thursday and that MPs agreed the need for further scrutiny of the TTIP negotiations. Yours sincerely Margaret Curran MP
