An inertia firing pin, also called a “floating firing pin” is one that is relatively heavy and is held in place in the center of the bolt by a spring. Since it does not contact the primer, a firearm with this type-firing device can “theoretically” be carried loaded with the hammer down. The old 1911 .45 auto is a gun that incorporates such a firing pin. Since the firing pin is “floating” the gun can discharge if dropped on the muzzle. The newer models have made improvements, which will preclude this hazard.
