An ingredient to a great movie is how it starts. A movies opening sets the tone the rest of the way. These crucial two minutes inform the audience what kind of movie they are getting ready for, and one could argue this ingredient and step is the most important direction in the recipe. Consider me a bit old-school, but I dig movies that start out with music and opening credits. (Quentin Tarantino is a master of this.) And this historic piece of film, Top Gun, nails it. Also, the sound editing overall in this national treasure is superb. Its as if director Tony Scott (God rest his soul) heard someone one day say, Ive got the need. The need for fantastic film-making, and then decided hed answer that need. And boy did he. No director since has so perfectly utilized Kenny Loggins. I cant imagine Kenny Loggins being used any better.
