An initiative to document the reality of violence against children, including children with disability in the Kingdom of Tonga, was launched by the European Union Ambassador for the Pacific, Andrew Jacobs today. The project is being implemented by Tongan non government organisations MaaFafine and Naunau o e Alamaite Tonga Association Inc. (NATA). “I thank MaaFafine and NATA for their commitment and dedication to this project. With your work and the help of the communities in Tonga, the project will make certain that the rights and the voices of children, including children with disabilities, are respected and heard throughout the Kingdom,” Ambassador Jacobs said. The TOP 280,000 (€ 119,000) EU-supported initiative will contribute to increasing awareness on the issue of violence against children and children with disabilities. It will support parents through counselling and the development of parenting skills in order to protect children and to prevent and respond to violence. The excellent work of MaaFafine and NATA will exemplify the EU efforts in Tonga, particularly in the context of the 2015 European Year of Development where are stepping up our efforts to capture and document real, meaningful impacts of the European Unions work on the ground, Ambassador Jacobs said.
