An insightful article by my nephew, San Diegos best personal trainer!: The TRUTH about Before and After “Transformation” photos Have you ever purchased a supplement or diet pill that promised to deliver the body of your dreams with little change in your diet or exercise? The ad appeared to good too be true, but with visions of looking like Ryan Reynolds or Jessica Alba, you bought it. My guess is you were disappointed when the fat didn’t “melt off” as promised. Advertisers use “doctor” and “celebrity” endorsements to add credibility, often using their pictures. I wonder if Hugh Jackman knows how many supplement ads use his picture? Advertisers further their credibility by crafting websites to look nearly identical to popular health and fitness websites, only slightly altering their logo. Celebrity and doctor endorsements help, but it’s the before and after “transformation” photos that truly convince people to buy these supplements. If it wasn’t for incredible transformation photos, I doubt outrageous advertisements like the ones below would sell. Seriously, check out the headlines from ads I recently found online. “Special Report: Lean muscle in a bottle? Men are getting 6 pack abs in just 1 month with Superior Velvet supplement that celebrities use. 1000% muscle gains.” What would a 1000 percent muscle gain even look like? The Incredible Hulk? Do I turn green, too? “Breaking News Scientist Discovers Ground Breaking Muscle Gain That Will Change The Way You Workout Forever!” – Of course, a scientist has finally cracked the code for us. “Controversy over Fast Muscle Growth trick. Gym owners want this banned. 1 Weird Tip Grows Muscle.” There is always a weird trick, or secret that has somehow been kept under wraps. This one specifically targeted at women. “Special Report: How to Lose 30 Pounds of Stomach Fat in just 1 Month With This One Trick Hollywood Celebrities Use.” If it works for celebrities, it has to work for us normal people! Each of those ads had amazing before and after pictures which surely helped convince people to buy it. Below you will find my personal before and after “transformation,” and some insight on how many transformation pictures are taken (including mine). You also learn why you shouldn’t believe everything thing you see! You can see I transformed from a “skinny fat” to lean, while adding some muscle. I haven’t gained “1000% muscle” like our advertisement above, but my physique is noticeably different. When I ask people how long they think my transformation took, the average guess is 6 months. The TRUTH is I took the photos 3.5 hours apart!! Below I explain how simple it is to fake a “transformation photo.” The BEFORE picture. 1.Internally rotating my thighs while wearing longer underwear makes my legs appear smaller. 2.Creating an anterior pelvic tilt (tipping the front of your hips downward), while pushing my stomach out as far as possible, makes my abs disappear. Protruding my head forward, while slumping my shoulders together makes any upper body musculature disappear. 3.And lastly, I put a depressed look on my face. I’m a “skinny fat,” and no one is happy being a skinny fat. The AFTER photo. 1.I completed a full body workout, giving me a good “pump.” 2.Retracting my shoulders and neck creates the illusion that I developed upper body musculature. 3.Externally rotating my legs makes my thighs appea larger. 4.A shorter pair of underwear, and cropping the photo closer also adds to the illusion that I’m bigger. 5.Lastly, I flexed while of course smiling. Who wouldn’t be happy? I just lost ten pounds of fat, while gaining 10 pounds of muscle in 3.5 hours. All it took was a weird, secret supplement, discovered by a scientist, that only celebrities know about! I showed two after photos. In the second, I used an extra lamp and a bit of coconut oil for added definition. The transformation would be even more dramatic with a professional photographer who has an understanding of lighting and a good camera (I used an i-phone). Photoshop and photography filters can also be used. Lighting and filters aren’t the only tricks used. It’s also possible to do time stamped before and after weigh-ins showing a 10-20 pound weight loss in just days! Through dehydration, you can lose about 20 pounds in 24 hours. This practice of “cutting weight” is common in combat sports. You can read how I “cut” 13 pounds in one day for a Jui-Jitsu tournament HERE. It’s water weight and is temporary, but adds to the illusion that a miracle supplement works! Sadly, none of what’s described above equates to real fat loss or muscle gain. My suspicion is that gimmicky supplement companies use transformation photos like mine ALL the time! Just imagine what could be done with a few weeks. Rather than discouraging you from achieving your ideal physique, I hope instead, this article motivates you. If you’ve spent money on a supplement only to fall short of looking like the fitness model on the bottle, don’t give up. There is still hope. You CAN achieve a killer physique. People are creating real before and after photos all the time! Unfortunately, those transformations aren’t found in a bottle or accomplished in 10 days. Each day spent on a quick fix gimmick is one day wasted. It’s a day that you can use creating REAL change. Transformations take hard work, time, and dedication. But don’t let the idea of hard work scare you off. If you take the necessary steps to achieve that physique (improving your nutrition and fitness, you know that whole “lifestyle” thing), not only will you look better, you will feel better than ever too! Between working with clients and presenting at seminars, I’m routinely reminded by people of the impact food and exercise has on their lives. I’m not only talking about abs, arms, and butts, you can impact EVERY aspect of your life! Your productivity at work, the strength of your relationships, your parenting, your capacity to deal with stress, and your overall happiness are all influenced by exercise and what you eat! Basically EVERYTHING in life is improved if you’re healthy and fit! Most people begin exercising by focusing on the look part. It’s the feeling great that keeps you motivated in the long haul. Endless energy and feeling vibrant and confident daily, will convince you to continue eating right and exercising long enough to reveal the physique you’re after! The reward of the necessary “lifestyle,” is far greater than just pounds on a scale. It’s something no scientist, celebrity, or supplement marketer can sell you! Great things take time. But be honest with yourself, how big of a deal is working out a few times a week and eating healthy? With three to four full body resistance training workouts each week, coupled with the removal of most processed foods your REAL transformation will be set in motion.
