An interesting article in Yoga Journal about the power of meditation, and a study done in part by Jon Denninger MD PhD, director of research at Massachusetts General Hospital and an instructor in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Here are some snippets: Scientists already understood that meditation reduces stress and illness, but they could not pinpoint exactly why. Now part of the puzzle may have been solved : Regular meditation creates change on a cellular level, essentially turning on clusters of good genes that make us healthier, while turning off clusters of bad genes that lead to disease.....In the study volunteers practiced a 20 minute daily meditation for 8 weeks....(and) was shown to turn on health promoting genes that boost immune response, energy metabolism and insulin secretion....and it turned down health depleting genes linked to stress and inflammation. Many of you have been asking for more meditation to be included in our classes too, so you can expect more in our Autumn programme.
