An interesting article, posted by a friend who lives in Sweden. Worth a read if, like me, you often see memes here on Facebook declarative of Utopian social, educational and economic conditions in Scandinavian countries. Disclosure: My husband, who is half Swedish, has relatives living in Sweden who have visited us here several times. While I have learned from them that there *are* Nordic quality-of-life aspects that put the US schema to shame (most having to do with a moral and legal code that is not so dependent on religion as is ours), there are also drawbacks. Indeed, the collectivism, modesty and pragmatism upon which their social successes were built prevail over individuality and ambition to this day. That may not sound like a huge trade-off to some folks; but I dont think most Americans realize just how much of who they are is the product of our fiercely individualistic, me-and-mine-first, you-can-be-whatever-you-want-to-be culture.
