An interesting article that is relevant to Niassa where the domestic dog populations continues to increase in villages inside the protected area. Dogs are kept to keep baboons out of fields, to warn people about predators in the village and to hunt bushmeat. In addition they can be the reservoirs for diseases that kill lions (canine distemper) and rabies (African Wild dogs). Rabies is also a human health risk and has killed many people in northern Mozambique in past years where the treatment is not easily available. Land use planning and vaccination is essential to restrict dogs to village surrounds and reduce interaction with wildlife and disease transmission.
