An interesting comment off the TDN web site Says the Mayor, When I looked into the faces of the people who were our Treaty partners . . . they were telling me the pain of not being engaged, and Im elected to bring our community together, he said. Mr Mayor, more than anything, you have an obligation to the whole community, to democracy. If a section of the community, in the case Maori, are feeling inadequately consulted, then look at your processes, identify where the problem is, and address it in a meaningful way, for ALL who feel disenfranchised. Maori do NOT have a monopoly on the feeling of being shafted, not listened to, not respected. Mr Mayor, had your proposal secured majority support you would have gained support amongst a few Iwi, but further eroded relationships within the wider community. Having one or two unelected and appointed Maori on your committees WOULD NOT have achieved the outcomes or aspirations of Tangata Whenua. It still takes on vote, one person and a majority. The community of which you are Mayor can be likened to managing a family. Do NOT pander to the demands of one, respond to the threats (I dont love you any ) of another, and apply fairness, integrity and tough love when needed. Until you do, the demands, the tears, will continue and escalate and your family will end up dysfunctional!
