An interesting experiment : In a particular corporate canteen, staff did not have to pay give their canteen coupons cash at the counter. There was a box kept on the counter and staff members had to just drop their coupons in the box after their tea/snacks/meals. The box had the image of a lotus on it. The canteen management would notice that often, regular customers wouldnt drop their coupons into the box everyday or would drop 1-2 coupons once a week. After a lot of discussions where the top bosses also took park the canteen management came up with one of the most ingenious solutions All they did was to replace the image of the lotus with a pair of eyes on the box. Thats it! Regular customers who often didnt pay, now ended up doing so, only because they felt that someone was watching. This experiment I feel demonstrates how guilt, regardless of its degree, is an emotion the brain disapproves of even when there is no one watching you. Sampath.
