An interesting piece by an American non-Muslim who argues that children should be tasked with responsibility from a younger age and criticises the elongation of childhood. The Islamic view is that a child becomes legally responsible upon reaching physical (and emotional) maturity which occurs at puberty. Therefore by this age through the Islamic education system children will be inculcated with accountability to the Creator, knowledge of the entire Shariah (Islamic laws) and prepared for life ahead. It is not surprising to hear of amazing youth who flourished under the Islamic Caliphate system such as Imam Shafi’i, one of the greatest scholars of this Ummah, who memorised the Qur’an when he was 7, was a mujtahid, a scholar, with the ability to derive solutions from the Qur’an and the Sunnah at the age of 14! (Today it is difficult for people to imagine going to a 14 year old to ask about Islamic law). Tariq ibn Ziyad conqueror of Spain and Muhammad al-Fateh, the conqueror of Constantinople (modern day Istanbul) were also very young men but all are exemplary models of what ‘children’ can achieve if cultivated under the correct system.
