An interesting thing happened at Superstore today. As I brought my groceries to the checkout, there was man at the front of the line about to pay for his groceries, he looked to be early 50s and was looking quite disheveled. Behind this man was an elderly woman, a Hutterite man who looked to be in his early 60s, then myself. As I waited, I took out my phone and played some games, I looked up and noticed that the elderly woman has out her phone and was playing games, but Hutterite man was just standing there getting annoyed with how long things were taking. The disheveled man in the front of the line was clearly getting frustrated, he had tried to use his debit card to pay for his stuff but something was wrong. At this point he looked in his wallet and took out around $35 and asked the cashier to put some in his card and the rest in cash...after 3 attempts of lowering the debit amounts he apologized the elderly lady behind him and proceeded to remove items that he now obviously could not afford. I whispered to the elderly lady and asked how much he was short. She smiled at me and proceeded to ask the cashier. The cashier asked the man if it was ok to tell us and he said ok but he was almost done removing items and picking the most important things. I looked at the mans items and it was a lot of items that Im used to seeing on a low income budget...Baby diapers, milk, rice, bread, ground beef, can soups, etc...all on sale...the only items out of place were a chocolate bar and a can of Redbull, but those too were on sale. The cashier responded to us by telling us he was just over $30 short on his total. The elderly woman looked at me and smiled as she knew what I was thinking and was thinking the same thing...together, we offered to pay the balance of his items. The disheveled gentleman accepted our offer and upon receiving all his items, including his chocolate bar and Redbull, he said he was very grateful, he felt a little like a bum, but was very very thankful for what we had done and began to shed a few tears. I had fully intended to buy a new keyboard for myself today, but I have several keyboards Im not even using and I think the money went to a better cause. Today was a pretty good day. :D
