An inventory of wetland non-passerine birds along a southeastern Brazilian coastal area -- Davi Castro Tavares & Salvatore Siciliano, Pp. 4586–4597 dx.doi.org/10.11609/JoTT.o3424.4586-97 1 – High richness records of non-passerine birds in natural coastal lagoons of northern Rio de Janeiro State, ecosystems under intense threat due to agriculture, land filling practices and the construction of ports that do not represent improvements in human development in Brazil. 2 – The increase in the number of species in the list of Nearctic shorebirds in the coastal environments of the surveyed area, from 5 to 17. 3 – The first documented record of Pomarine Jaeger Stercorarius pomarinus in Rio de Janeiro State. 4 – Discovery of an important staging area for non-passerine birds, including nearctic shorebirds with declining populations at global level and large flocks of threatened species at regional level. 5 – Coastal lagoons localized very near the outer limits of Restinga de Jurubatiba, a federal protected area, seems to be important sites for the reproduction and feeding of birds threatened at regional level. However, these lagoons remain unprotected and under threat due to the construction of new ports and shipyards in the region. 6 – A good accuracy of the jackknife 1 estimator in predicting waterbird richness based only on presence-absence data collected in 12 surveys, in comparison with the richness attested after 72 additional surveys. 7 – The proposal of a new kind of approach for Brazilian ornithologists interested in wetland birds, underlining the importance of habitat conditions and the negative impacts of the alterations of natural conditions concerning waterbirds. 8 – Description of the seasonal patterns of wetland birds richness in northern Rio de Janeiro State.
