An ode to Havana Two years ago you came into our lives. We saw your photo and the short description on the internet and fell in love. Your days were numbered, if no one would adopt you, you would have been put to sleep. We reserved you and the organization Tierhilfe ALF in Germany arranged for your transportation from Spain. You spent one day at your foster mum Edith, and I flew down to Düsseldorf to bring you home. You panicked when you saw me, did everything you could to get away from me. As soon as you were in the car on the way to the airport though, you started to bond with me. The first 4 months with you were so hard. We really doubted our decision to adopt you. You bit Fiffi, my mother, Ayhan and snapped at children. We were heartbroken and cried and couldn’t read you. Then one night after New Years Eve, you bit me in the face as I went to say goodnight to you. Your eye rolled in my direction, and that was enough for me to get prepared for what would happen. That’s why I could calmly, but with force, let you know that this is not an acceptable behavior. And somehow, that was like flipping a switch. From that day on, you changed completely. Softened and trusted us, started to heal and enjoy your new life. That was when we decided we would never let you go. You are still scared of strangers, it isn’t easy for you to trust people and I am sure you have your reasons. But you continue to make progress every single day and you have turned into the most fantastic dog I have ever met. You have made some best friends in people as well as in dogs. You run and play, chase your tail when no one wants to fight with you, you are the most gentle creature when it comes to our little baby boy and your eyes- those unbelievably beautiful trusting eyes. When you look at us our hearts sing. Gone is the fear and the stress, all that is left is love, happiness and a sense of security. If I never accomplish anything else of value in my life, I will still be satisfied on the day I die. Because of you Havana, simply because you came into our lives and we could make a difference in yours.
