An open letter to The New York Times, The Washington Post, The L.A. Times, The Boston Globe and all other newspapers and news web sites charging a subscription for their web content; For years I and millions others have loved visiting your web sites when they were free. We discovered news in suburban Maryland, outer LA, as well as enjoying your front page coverage of national and international stories and features. It was great, the free part, we learned more about the news and the world thanks to you. But the free part could not last. Now it costs. But here’s the problem. We don’t want one subscription; we want to visit all of you. Since you have all gone with a paid platform I have stayed away. That means I don’t see your ads. I will bet you have noticed that many others too have stayed away. That makes you less relevant and read and paid attention, even unpaid, declining cannot be good. Here’s my suggestion: instead of individual subscriptions could you not come up with a “bit coin” like system, a scale, maybe even a sliding scale, that is usable in all participating news web sites? It seems like there should be an app for that. I realize that there’d have to be some software created and a payment division system developed but it’s pretty simple request: 1) we do not want to subscribe to one web news source and 2) we’d like to visit all of you on web surfing basis. Here’s hoping you come up with a way for us to pay to do this. Mike Hurley Belfast Maine
