An open letter to conservatives... It wasnt more than a hundred and ten years ago when Mark Twain wrote down that men, our age today, knew and secretly were proud that their grandchildren were going to know more than they did in almost everyway. It was on the horizon in 1904, the old men could smell it. they knew they would not live to see it or reap the benefits personally, but were proud cause a part of them would and even a barren old woman, watching the kids go to school, felt it too. Family of man. We are all a part. Of course, the old men were right, women too. From 1950 to 2000, advancements in every area bore fruit. More changed for the better in those fifty years than the 500, 5000, 50,000 before them. We lived to see it, and were spoiled as we grew up, all our parents wanting better for us than they had for themselves. we know we are further along than our parents,(and we know what that means)just as Twain knew his great grandchildren would be further along. I am guessing now, but fifty or sixty years before Twain was mulling this over, Ralph Waldo Emerson was busy with his pen, writing The Conservative. You can get it from the library, like your father. Bet you can get it on the internet, you can get it on your phone. I have not been to any of these places looking, Im going from memory, read it in the sixties, and Emerson believed that the conservative is the guardian. His never ending battle against change, is always a losing one, but he guards against rapid and ill advised change. His job is to know when to kick his heels into the dirt, and when to trot along, beside the horses of change. Many of the institutions we cling to out of habit, fear, respect for our traditions and our families are crumbling. I am not here to advocate policy. I want to say that a lot was asked of our fathers and mothers, and they rose to the occasion. some calling them the greatest generation. (members of that generation) Others said wheres your shame, youve left us up to our necks in it. It is time to show that we are further along. I dont think the sky is falling, but I think our country needs us to stop acting like intractable idiots. We all now know, that one man cant bring about change we can believe in. We have to do it together. 27 lines at sixteen words a line is four hundred and thirty words in roughly ten minutes is forty three words a minute! Facebook has done for me what my eighth grade typing teacher never could. think Ill go have a beer.
