An open letter to the Fellsmere Community, Many thanks to those - TopicsExpress

An open letter to the Fellsmere Community, Many thanks to those who have commented on the Disturbance between neighbors ends in father and son going to jail post below. Our use of social media has enabled us to connect with the community better than weve been able to in the past, offers residents an opportunity to express their thoughts, and provides transparency in all that we do. Frequent visitors to this page will note that we make a great effort to share all types of information believed to be of interest to our community and arrest reports are no exception. Our goal is to create awareness, promote voluntary compliance with the law, and generate information that will help solve crimes. In the past, if a law enforcement agency had information to share with the community, it issued a press release to traditional media sources and relied on them to cover the story. By providing information directly to our community through social media, we ensure that information is released in a timely, accurate manner. In addition, since local and regional media monitor us 24/7 and contact our agency regularly for information, photographs, and anything believed to be newsworthy, posting information here helps accomplish our responsibility to issue press releases. Since we have no idea what one media outlet may consider newsworthy over another, we make them aware of all arrests and they decide what to report on. This is especially true in incidents that occur in the public eye like this arrest in particular. The feedback we regularly receive for these efforts has been largely positive, while those who disagree express their thoughts here. Comments are not censured unless they are offensive (our settings automatically filter most of that), or attack someone personally. Arrest affidavits and booking photos are public record and available to anyone who asks. They have been made available online for years because the public wants to...demands to know, and clearly has a right. We are doing our part to facilitate that information and what is shared here is no different than what can be read online through any traditional news source. Arrests are based on probable cause generated through the collection of physical and testimonial evidence and are made in good faith. As noted in our disclaimer, everyone arrested is innocent until proven guilty. That is more than just a statement; it is respected by the members of this organization as much the publics right to know public record is respected. It is our sincere hope that the Fellsmere Community will see our Facebook page as a valuable community service; one designed not only to create awareness, promote voluntary compliance with the law, and generate information that will help solve crimes as previously mentioned; but one that increases the public trust in our agency and results in improving our quality of life. Sincerely, Keith M. Touchberry Chief of Police Fellsmere Police Department
