An unbelievable reminder after over 25 years. When David was - TopicsExpress

An unbelievable reminder after over 25 years. When David was two years old he contracted measles and was very ill. It left him with a very bad squint in both eyes and he had to wear glasses and patches in an attempt to to correct them. He had a painful operation when he was 3 but it was unsuccessful. He was regularly called ”cross eyes or “west eyes by a gang of older kids in the area but he never let it bother him. He was often tormented and regularly had his glasses smashed by the same gang of boys. It never stopped him doing anything, he had no fear and he would retaliate with words. I used to plead with him not to to do this for fear of retribution. One day he’d gone off to the park in his new jeans. He was 10 years old. In the park were the bully boys. One particular boy who was much older (15) than Dave was verbally abusing him as usual when David retaliated and called him PAN FACE. A fair description of his unfortunate looks. The teenager grabbed David and threw him forcefully onto a rock splitting his knee cap open and left him. I remember being worried as he was late home and as I walked to the park to try to find him I noticed him limping towards me with his new jeans completely ripped. I was busy shouting at him pulling his jeans off him and then what I saw horrified me. A huge gash down to the bone and his surrounding skin just hanging. He didnt even cry. We of course, went straight to casualty where he had over 20 stitches and I’ll never forget when the doctor finished he just said “ thanks mate” I was so devastated by the incident, I put Dave in the car drove him to the Manchester Eye Hospital, burst into tears and asked for help. I told them there must be something that could be done to straighten his eyes and told them of his constant abuse. As a result David had a second operation 6 months later when he was just 11 by one of the hospitals leading surgeons and both eyes were straightened and he never wore glasses again. 25 years later, at a very recent Manchester COP guess who David saw………You’ve guessed it. I can’t wait to see this man because he was my driving force when I first got involved in this industry to work hard, and to move out of the area where we lived and he was the force who through his actions made me take David to the Eye Hospital that day and plead for them to help! Wonder what he thought when he saw David give his testimonial at the meeting? Wonder what he thinks when I give mine?
