An unmissable journey in art and landscape. As a photographer of garden design and land art its rare a subject is life-threatening, I wont bore with the details, but this journey was one from which I very nearly didnt return. In the feature I write about the experience of walking alone in remote mountains in winter and how that helps the experience compared to walking in company. You can see it on the news stands now translated in to French as a 10 page article in the 20 year anniversary edition of the lovely magazine Eden. In the article we explore a little about the experience of walking the Refuges DArt project by Andy Goldsworthy in the Reserve Naturelle Geologique de Haute-Provence, a 150 km circular walk through the three valleys of the geological reserve, travelling works by Goldsworthy in the landscape and staying in mountain steadings/bunk houses with Goldsworthy works made inside. The article began as a scouting trip for National Geographic in Washington which we hope to publish in the future, but in the meantime I have run this article with Eden. They have made lovely reproductions of the scouting photographs which were not shot on the large format I usually work with, but a very good DSLR, with the lovely contrasty bright, clear, low light in the winter mountains north of the Med the pictures worked well. Also a rare and enjoyable opportunity to write the article as I usually work with a writer, but the nature of this trip meant it needed to be made alone. I highly recommend making this trip, Ive been going since the project started over 10 years ago and look forward to the next visit. For most the journey into the geological reserve starts here in the Musee Gassendi in Digne les Bains where Goldsworthy has made a clay wall work amongst the museums lovely collection of northern Provencal paintings. In contrast the other photograph here is a clay wall by Goldsworthy inside one of the small bunk houses high on a mountain plane where you can spend the night sleeping and waking with the work of art.
