An unpleasant scam! Someone I know was very nearly victim to a nasty scam. They applied for a job which had been advertised and the firm invited them for interview. Prior to the interview they were told they must be CRB checked. The firm asked over the phone for various items of information about the person INCLUDING THEIR BANK DETAILS. Fortunately the bank spotted what was going on and stopped a number of direct debits the person had never set up. I used to do CRB checks and have been recently rechecked personally. While part of the CRB procedure will have changed since I last did any checks, the following I believe still apply (but I do stand to be corrected):- I always had to see the person being checked face to face (including people I already knew well). There was never any requirement for bank details (although bank statements counted towards establishing a persons identity - BUT NEVER BANKERS CARD DETAILS). The CRB checks were for people who would be working with children or vulnerable children, never for positions related to anything else. It is my understanding that where positions to work with children or vulnerable people are offered to applicants the offer will be subject to a satisfactory CRB check. The check will never take place before the offer of a job. Sadly where unemployment is high we shall probably see more of this sort of scam. It infuriates me that the scammers are going for people who are often already struggling through unemployment.
