An unprecedented event has occurred in the history of the Communist Chinese state - student protesters have forced the government to have an open debate with them on Hong Kongs political future. For those protesters watching the debate as a live broadcast from the main protest site, which they have held for over three weeks now, this moment is a major step forward for the Umbrella Movement. Ultimately, as was expected, the government “didn’t give us a material response or direction. We’re disappointed, and we must continue to stay here,” as one the five student leaders taking part in the debate commented but, even so, the fact that the government has been forced to admit the influence the students have due to their determination is a victory compared to the quashed hopes and dreams of the Tiananmen Square protesters. Also on discussion was the economic divide which has also fueled the Umbrella Movement in addition to the disagreements over the upcoming election. “Is he [the next Chief Executive] going to be serving the tycoons and the business sector? Is this system democratic, is it free?” In this battle of ordinary people vs. corporate tycoons and corrupt politicians, the people of Hong Kong have shown the world that when determined people organize to demand fair, representative government there is no amount of money, no amount of police violence and no tricks by corrupt officials in the pay of tycoons that can stop them.
