An update: We are fighting hard against FTB and forcing young people to go without assistance. SOCIAL Services Minister Kevin Andrews is prepared to look at other options from the Senate crossbenchers in negotiations over the Family Tax Benefit system. Mr Andrews said he was still committed to the budget plan to deny under-30s the dole for six months but was open to receiving new policy to keep family tax benefits under control. If crossbenchers have other ideas about how Family Tax Benefits could be more sustainable I would like to hear those ideas, Mr Andrews said. I would also point out that the Australian Council of Social Services has endorsed a number of saving measures such as the abolition of the seniors supplement, tightening up pension income test from 2017 and the income test for FTB B. The reductions in Family Tax Benefit Part A and B are estimated to save $7.4bn over four years but larger amounts in later years as fewer people qualify for payments. But despite strong opposition from the majority of the crossbench on the radical Newstart policy, the minister said he was wedded to it. With regards to the earn and learn policy, I dont believe it is over the top to ask young job-ready Australians to either work or conduct full-time training or study, Mr Andrews said. I am confident the crossbenchers will see past Labors scaremongering with regards to the age pensions and the need for a sustainable program. Mr Andrews chances of striking a deal is unlikely to win support. Palmer United Party senator Jacqui Lambie has said proposed Coalition changes to the dole will cause people to consider suicide. It comes after Family First senator Bob Day vowed to lobby all crossbench senators to kill the dole reform, saying he was unwilling to negotiate on a compromise deal. The Australian understands the government is prepared to reduce the time that young people are denied the Newstart payment to secure Senate support.
