An update from Glyn now hes back in the office.. London to Edinburgh Cycle Ride (continued) York to Durham leg took us through some lovely parts of Yorkshire, the market towns of Thirsk and Northallerton nicely positioned between the moors and dales, then Darlington where the roads were rolling and sharp climbs were rewarded with occasional downhill sections. We arrived at Durham just before 6pm, the pubs and bars were already busy with people making the most of the warm evening. A Jazz festival was being held at or around the Cathedral that evening. After an early breakfast in the hotel (Premier Inn) and we were on the road for 8 am, the weather forecast prepared us for the final leg of the journey, “it was going to be wet”, said Carol from the BBC. We arrived in Edinburgh around 6:45 pm on Saturday evening, tired and soaked to the skin, there is a point were you just cant get any wetter, and we achieved that point a few hours before Edinburgh. The ride from Berwick on Tweed was tough, it took us over some seriously lumpy but beautiful countryside, as soon as we started climbing, we were in and out of cloud, we climbed some more over the Lammermuir hills totally immersed in cloud. Rain started to fall around mid afternoon making the descent into the outskirts of Edinburgh exciting. My highest freewheel speed of the tour was achieved on one of these descents, around 45mph. Godfrey had put in many hours of work preparing and mapping our route. He did a brilliant job as usual. Only diversions and road closures threw us off course, but our route was soon recovered. Total mileage cycled 413 miles. No punctures or mechanical woes were encountered although brake squeal was more prominent on my bike, and both bikes need a good clean. Thanks to Cyclesense of Tadcaster for servicing/preparing my bike. After a quick sightseeing session we departed Edinburgh around midday on Sunday (20 July) on the EastCoast train, Godders went back to Dorset (Hazelbury Bryan) via London, I had the shorter journey to back into Yorkshire. We would like thank everyone who offered support and for all the good luck messages we received before and throughout the ride; these encouraging words kept us huffing & puffing up the hills and pushing the pedals when we were against the wind. A special thank you to my work colleagues at Key-SE, who kept in touch with me throughout the ride ensuring all was well both at home and on the bike. Im stunned by the generosity off family, friends, colleagues and people who wanted to give to our chosen charity, Cyclists Fighting Cancer (CFC); we havent collected all the pledges yet, but to date we have received £1020, an amazing amount of money. Thank you so much, this money will make a difference to children and young people who have been affected by cancer throughout the UK. If you would like to make a donation to CFC or want to know more about the work they do, you can do so by visiting cyclistsfc.org.uk
