An update from the man himself... Here is Trefors update from last week - INTO THE AUTUMN FISHING Glad to see the back of August, maybe September will be more productive bite wise. Kennet for three days: Day 1. Hopped about over small pre-baits, two bites that were not crayfish, 4lbs 8ozs and 6lbs ozs in daylight and a pristine barbell 7lbs 14ozs into dusk picked up the Sausage Sizzle sprayed pellet. Day 2. Back to the swim that produced the 6 pounder, end of second sequence again on Sausage Sizzle pellet the rod hammered round from static, great scrap, a beast of a fish that refused to yield to maximum pressure, nice one 8lbs 3ozs. What a buzz, sat in the sun content with life, I love 8lbs fish, they don’t have to be doubles when they look and fight like that. An hour later round two, a repeat performance, epic battle, fin perfect mint condition fish 8lbs 7ozs. A 7lbs 11ozs matched the two previous fish in appearance and fighting spirit. 4lbs 10ozs, 4lbs 12ozs picked up Ocean Pride paste after dark. Crayfish city when I retired to the van. Day 3. Lone Angler boss Mike O’Neill joined me. A beautiful day, warm sunshine, content to wait for my subtle small pre-bait to unfold. End of second sequence again, the rod awoke from it’s slumber responding to a tremendous pull as a barbel bolted in alarm as the hair rig hook dropped and pricked it’s lip. 54’s clutch purring it’s magic sound signaling contact with another terrific fish. Several attempts to reach the unknown snag that I had been cut off on the previous evening were thwarted by maximum side strain and a finger on the spool as I refused to concede any more line to one angry barbel. She boiled on the top, I smiled, she turned away from the snag and moved upstream, she’s mine now. Mike netted my prize first go. What an adrenalin rush, a gorgeous bronze sparkling fish lay nestling in my net. 9lbs 3ozs, Mike took photo of how I like to rest the fish after capture in the landing net, fish like this are priceless commodities of the river. Please ensure your fish is fully recovered before releasing, fifteen minutes rest in an upright position in the net is my minimum recovery time, longer if you are unsure that the fish is not fully fit. Two hours later here we go again, Sausage Sizzle pellet irresistible to another sparkling example of Kennet barbel perfection, 8lbs 11ozs. Ten fish all fighting fit in pristine condition, I felt privileged to have caught them. Not a double amongst them, who cares, three days of totally exhilarating barbel fishing in my book. Note to self, ‘must try harder’. I smiled all of the ninety mile drive home to Coventry. Three days with Kath, my wife in the Isle of Man to celebrate our fifty years of marriage, she calculated I’ve only been there for five of them, I told her to stop exaggerating. We had a nice time. Back to the Teme, six good chub bites, one self hooker 3lbs. No barbel bites but watched three small fish feeding on the gravel which was a first for my companion. Guest on a new section of the Wye, ‘loved it’. Barbel 6lbs 0ozs, 6lbs 2ozs, 7lbs 14ozs and some nice upstruck chub bites. Hope to go again when there’s some water on. Hectic start to the month, two weeks in Majorca next, it’s a tough job but I’m hanging on in there. Tight lines, Trefor
