An update in Carol Waynes health: A slow recovery is underway for Carol right now. The milestones come slowly though they are positive. There are some ups and downs. The diagnosis of e-coli was made last week but the source unknown. Carol, able to open her eyes for a second in two, can track sound a bit but then returns to her sleepy state Drs seem agreed there will be more time in ICU. I see a long rehab time. All the evidence is that this will be a slow and challenging recovery. Doug will resume patient appointments this afternoon ( one of our better milestones) and is planning a return to partial schedule next week. Here at St Francis... So I have been waiting for some milestone I might report but they have not appeared. The gradual improvement of Carols blood chemistry (hemoglobin, HDL, creatinine) has slowed. Platelets are diminished enough to need transfusion. No movement in three of her limbs. Was incubated but breathing on her own, but now is back to being supported at a 10% level. The hopes for extubation seem days farther away. Consciousness...Carol, able to open her eyes for a second in two, can track sound a bit. She can be startled now, but there is not yet any sign of responding when spoken to. Doug has been asking trusted friends about recovery from brain injury that is linked to such events. There is not diagnosis of brain injury, but clearly the symptoms suggest the probability. Drs seem agreed there will be more time in ICU. I see a long rehab time. What you can do for Carol ( and Doug) ...Doug reads to carol all the email she gets at her email address. This keeps her stimulated and creates a record of who reached out so that later, Carol can understand. He encourages people to write at [email protected]. This is the best way for most people to be of help right now. The status continues ...no visitors at this time.
