An update on Nicole Santiago. She is doing pretty well. She was able to lose the c-collar and get off oxygen among a few other things. We found a few new fractures (or ones I didnt hear about last night in all the chaos). Thankfully none of the fractures are surgical. I think we are at 10 fractures now. She has an amazing team of doctors and professionals. She is being followed by neurosurgery, orthopedics, trauma, physical pain and medicine, ENT and even speech therapy and physical therapy. Her main problems are headache and her hips (she has multiple bilateral hip fractures). Pain control is a HUGE issue because when she starts having pain she also starts to have breathing issues. She had an amazing cognitive test today so that was super promising. We are still waiting on the results of a right shoulder x-ray. The docs said we could find additional fractures for a long time because there are so many possibilities. The biggest issue right now besides the headaches, is we sat up and tried to transfer to the commode. I cant begin to explain how excruciating that was for her (and for me). I finally lost the tough mama bear in me and started to cry. We had some awesome visitors today, including my mom and sister who flew in from California and that is the biggest relief Ive had having them here. We really need prayers for a restful night tonight (Im working on about an hour of sleep from last night) and that will help Nicole heal. We also need prayers for being able to move around and sit up, stand and walk. We will either go home in a wheelchair or with a walker and I pray for the walker option. (although we may have a wheelchair for long distances). We are out of the woods, I believe, with all the big life-threatening stuff, but we have a very long road ahead. Thank you everyone for your love and support. You have no idea how much it is appreciated. Nicole is one tough kid and so well loved!
