An update on my mom, Karen. As some have known, or are finding - TopicsExpress

An update on my mom, Karen. As some have known, or are finding out, mom is in the hospital. Shes stable and making progress every day, but per her request this news has been kept to just close family and friends and off of Facebook in general. That changes with this post as it will be easier to communicate with our family and friends out of state and other friends, family and coworkers locally that Ive kinda disappeared on for the last week. Last weekend with stomach pain she was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Tests revealed gallstones to be the culprit and it was soon found her pancreas was infected as a result so she was admitted. The next morning (Tuesday) they had problems waking her up due to low oxygen in her blood... which was a side effect of kidney failure that hadnt been diagnosed quite yet. At this point she was suffering from respiratory failure as she wasnt able to bring enough oxygen due to excess fluid in her system from the kidney failure. They outfitted her with an awful breathing mask forcing high O2 air into her mouth/nose. The mask helped, but not enough, so that evening they sedated and intubated (installed a breathing breathing tube) her. This concluded a very rough day, and they have thankfully all been positive ever since. Since Tuesday, weve seen her infection decrease, her kidneys recover (at one point they were considering dialysis), and her O2 level required on the ventilator go from 80% down to 50% as of this evening. At 40% they can consider removing it and proceeding with surgery to remove her gallbladder. Various tests have all confirmed this progress. She is sedated but wakes up briefly at times as treatments are administered or tweaked, or feels like picking a fight with the ventilator tech and chewing on her tube. So whats next? The ventilator has got to come out, and then theyll remove her gallbladder. As we progress towards these milestones Ill publicly update my timeline (and tag my mom, so that way it appears on hers as well) so you know whats going on. If you have questions or concerns, youre welcome to ask them publicly or privately and Im happy to answer what I can. Finally, were not religious, superstitious, etc. but my family and I are happy to take any likes, prayers, happy thoughts or whatever works for you to contribute to the recovery of my mom. The support from my family, friends and coworkers has been nothing but amazing and we thank you for that. Until next time... I expect future updates to be a bit briefer :) Thanks.
