An update on the case of Army Master Sergeant Nathan Sommers. He - TopicsExpress

An update on the case of Army Master Sergeant Nathan Sommers. He was a decorated soloist with the Army Band and a spotless 25-year military record. Then, he claimed he started receiving reprimands for things like expressing his Christian beliefs, holding a Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day party, reading books by conservative authors and having anti-Obama bumper stickers on his private car. Suddenly, he found himself facing Article 15 charges for minor, petty offenses like allegedly giving an officer an incorrect doctor’s appointment date. Retired Navy Commander John Bennett Wells told Fox News that the charges were “ridiculous.” Sommers went public, complaining that the military command was discriminating against him because of his conservative political and religious views. It sparked a wave of public outrage. That didn’t get the charges dropped: last week, he was found guilty on three of them. But maybe it did have some effect: his punishment was an oral reprimand and no reduction in rank. Still, Sommers plans to appeal, and he says he may sue. Members of the US military voluntarily put their lives on the line to protect our basic right to hold our own religious and political beliefs. They shouldn’t have to give up theirs.
