An update on the horrific deaths in India: insecticides can kill humans Indian police finds toxic pesticides in poisoned kids’ meal Toxic agricultural pesticides have been found in food samples taken from a rural area school in northern India where 23 children died after eating free lunches, the police said on Saturday. The samples contained the pesticide monocrotophos in levels that were “very toxic” for humans, a chief local police official said. No arrests have yet been made in the incident, which happened in Gandamal village north of the city of Patna on Tuesday. The victims aged between 5 and 12, as well as some other kids who survived the poisoning, have fallen ill after eating a free midday meal distributed as part of the country’s school nutrition program. Authorities also said they have discovered a container of insecticide in the school’s kitchen next to the cooking oil, but it has remained unclear if that container was the source of toxic material.
