An update on the result of removing Flirmask from reflector. (Sunday) A drop in temp of average 5C Humidity has dropped a bit, I removed the wet matting from in front of the fans as it was taking temp down to 22C. In the third photo you can see the leaves are not showing face to the lamp, and growing tips are being protected by emerging leaf.that was before I swapped reflective materials. Centre photo taken today showing my two 9 week old Borg 9. Leaves are pumping up properly. And most important the Meristems are being exposed to the light, which sayshappy plant. (Ernest Borgnine actor is where the plant gets its name, named as Ernies departure was announced I dont think John Harper is a Trekkie). The massive water use has dropped to what you would expect in these conditions. I am quite pleased with myself for working out Infra Red was the cause of the plants stress. For any Newbies reading, when doing cuttings under any light how the emerging leaves react with the tip is giving you a lot of information. The three main pieces are. Tip open all leaves angled upward........Not enough light Tip open leaves flat and opening away from tip. In the Zone Tip closed new leaf trying to cover it. ...Too much light or wrong light ,(incandescent, halgen and such) These rules are exactly the same for all plants in and out. For any one serious about growing knowing the language of the leaves beyond nutrient deficiencies is a great asset. This is the reason our stereotyped image of a farmer(pre Monstersanto) Is of a straw chewing jolly red faced man, leaning on his field gate enjoying another golden dawn. He isnt enjoying anything, hes working. Studying his crop intensively looking for anything amiss. lack of blue light changes the way we see green. So any bronzing of leaves shines out, before it becomes apparent in normal light. A field of plants will wake in a wave across the land as the sun rises. Any plant in trouble will be slow to rise, as the other plants pick up and catch the light they glow, the slow plants stand out as dark patches. Our farmer goes to investigate! He can spot a sick corn plant in a field of millions. Different note... I got my first Seedplant SuperHot flowers at the weekend I usually have flowers end of May, very late this summer the average temps are a bit down but the actual amounts of good sustained sunshine has been poor. Lots of dank cloudy days, lets hope it gets better. I blame the local indoor marijuana growers. They are always doing Rain-Dances so their crops dont fry in the hot weather. Going away for a few days I will leave my plants with my brilliant Mrs who is very capable and always reliable ; though like all plant-sitters she does have a tendency to give a little bit too much water. She likes her ground growing where all you end up doing is watering the ground and hope your plant gets some. Pots, is more involved more intimate and I like that. Growing indoors, under lights using Hydro is up another level. There are two ways of looking at it, you can be the Benign God in total control of your little Eden. Or the willing slave, any other outlook and you are doomed to fail. What way do I look at it? A bit of both folks, a bit of both! It keeps me sane. Catch you all next week.
