An update on where we are with John PADENs origins in brief. It appears that John PADEN b 1765 is related to at least one PEDEN with origins in Coleraine, Londonderry, Ireland. And he is also related to a PEDEN bc 1740 in Scotland. A thorough search finds no early PADEN/PEDEN etc in Derry, Ireland before the mid 1700s so it is my strong suspicion that Johns family was in Scotland before Ireland. Given that so many of the descendants married heavily into Scottish families this make sense. The DNA matches and testing so far has upheld this hypothesis. Our closest PADEN DNA matches have not done deep YDNA testing yet but of the matches a bit father away (still relatively close) We are in a branch of the Y tree called R and below that a mutation or SNP with the name M222 defines a large contingent of men with roots in Northern Ireland and SW Scotland. Whether their deeper origins lie in Ireland (as many contend) Scotland, Britain or in mainland Europe is still up for grabs but these are as far as can be determined an ancient celtic group. As DNA research breaks up the M222 bunch in to ever smaller clans we are DF105+ and DF85+ and awaiting results of DF97 (all SNPS) which I expect will be positive. Either way it starts to cluster surnames in ever tighter family groupings with every tighter geographical origins. Find Larry PADEN towards the center left in this chart kennedydna/M222.pdf. You will see lots of different surnames but they have some interesting connections in the ancient clans of Ireland and Scotland. My current guestimate places our John PADENs kin around the parishes of Ayr in Ayrshire in Scotland and perhaps associated with the McKies, Maxwells, MacDowells and others in the area of WIgtown and Kirkcudbright before that. I will give you more information as it becomes available.
