Anambra council polls: CD condemns conduct of primaries in parties The Campaign for Democracy (CD) has condemned the clumsy and fraud-ridden conduct of political parties’ primaries for aspirants in Anambra council polls. This was contained in statement issued by CD to newsmen in Awka on Tuesday. The statement was signed by Dede Uzor A. Uzor, Chairman, CD South-East Region. The statement said that a critical assessment and review of what transpired in most parties’ primaries shows that the country was still far from achieving modern democratic tenants. It said that the fraud-ridden and highly manipulated primaries show that ``there is no internal democracy in most political parties in Anambra’’. ``While the autocratic nature of imposition of a candidate by the parties’ leadership show the low political inclination and education in most political parties,’’ it said. CD frowned at the inability of some parties to conduct a conclusive primaries in some council area, especially when acclaimed political god-fathers had vowed to have their own anointed candidate at the detriment of the party people’ wish. ``I clear case study is that of APGA in Idemili North; where it is alleged that Chief Ifeanyi Udokwu a.k.a. Ekwueme Ogidi is strongly imposing an aspirant, Mr Amaechi Akume on the people of the council area against the party people’s wish of conducting a free, fair and credible primaries,’’ it said. It, however, urged Gov. Peter Obi and other stakeholders in APGA to intervene in the interest of peace to safe democracy and allowing the party people’s wish to be done. In a related development, CD is unhappy over the slow-pace of the on-going voters’ registration exercise. ``Both Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are not showing serious signs of readiness for the Oct. 5 and Nov. 16 council poll and governorship election respectively. ``For now, ANSEIC and INEC have not created the needed awareness and publicity on the forthcoming elections for Anambra residents and people. ``And if the ANSIEC is not sure of its ground come Oct. 5, it is even safe for the election to be canceled and shifted to next year, after the governorship poll,’’ it maintained.
