Anambra stampede: Church rules out sabotage November 3, 2013by Emmanuel ObeThe Roman Catholic Church has said the early Saturday morning stampede at the Holy Ghost Adoration Centre at Uke, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State could have been caused by a false alarm. But the church said it was not suspecting any deliberate act of sabotage in the incident that led to the death of more than 25 people. The All Progressives Grand Alliance and the All Progressives Congress have traded blame on the stampede. In a statement read to the press by the Director of Social Communication, Rev. Fr. Pius Ukor, on behalf of the Metropolitan Archbishop of Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province, Most Rev Valerian Okeke, the church said the programme at the Adoration Centre started and ended normally before the stampede occurred as the worshippers were leaving the ground. He disclosed that an all-night prayer usually holds at the centre on every first Friday of the month. He added, “The crowd at the centre was unprecedented on this first Friday of November 2013 probably because it was the Solemnity of All Saints and a holy day of obligation for Catholic faithful.
