Ancient Africans believed it was a community problem when anyone was mentally, physically, or spiritually sick because everyone is part of the community. Thus if one person is sick the entire community would be affected due to all being spiritually connected and sharing the same spiritual space. This is why mourning was public and not private, as the whole community would go through this cathartic release of emotion. __________________________________ Have some friends who are on a 16-day 330 mile memorial ride from Lower Brule, SD to Mankato, MN culminating as we speak which is a ceremonial commemoration for the largest public hanging in US History when then-sitting President, Abraham Lincoln, ordered the hanging of 38 Dakota Indians the day after Christmas (152 years ago today) in 1862. The Dakota 38+2 Memorial Ride began in 2005 as a way to promote reconciliation between American Indians and non-Native people. Other goals of the Memorial Ride include: provide healing from historical trauma; remember and honor the 38 + 2 who were hanged; bring awareness of Dakota history and to promote youth rides and healing.
