Ancient Copan: Maya City for the Ages Copan is an archaeological site of the Maya civilization located in the Copán Department of western Honduras, not far from the border with Guatemala. The sculptures, scattered throughout this great city, are unique and expressive. In a number of examples, figures are holding unknown devices and instruments from a science or technology lost in time. To this day, we can only guess at what these cherished items are or their purpose. Copán is thought to have been occupied for more than two thousand years, from the Early Preclassic period right through to the Postclassic, but could be significantly older. The city developed a distinctive sculptural style within the tradition of the lowland Maya, perhaps to emphasize the Maya ethnicity of the citys rulers. This is a small gallery of the special sculptures from Copan.
