Ancient Mars Artifact: The Face on Mars The question of artificial structures on the surface of Mars, specifically the Cydonia region, has been hotly debates for over three decades. In 1976, NASA’s Viking satellite flew over the planet and took a photo (Figure 1), of what appeared to be a huge face. Estimates were that the face was 1.2 miles long, by about a mile wide and contained features including eyes, nose and a mouth. NASA was quick to state that this was an illusion or trick of light and shadow, but a number of imaging experts, spent considerable time and effort to study of face and determined it was a work of structural engineering on a massive scale. Richard Hoagland, a science reporter, would eventually go on television and speak to groups of scientists, that this massive face was truly man-made. The debate would rage on for more than a decade with NASA refusing to re-image the face, even though they could easily photograph the area with one of the many subsequent missions it scheduled to Mars. Researcher investigators would have to wait until 2001 for the face to be photographed – and the results were less than satisfactory. (Images 2,3,5,6.) It’s hard to fathom why NASA took such poor quality, out of focus and poor angled photos to present to the public – but somewhere, the decision was made to limit the quality of the structure through images, to the degree that in a few example, the face was reduced to a “Cat Box,” of mangled sections. It wouldnt be until 2003 when the European Space Agency (Photo 4) directed its satellite, Mars Express, to capture what most believed was a massive man-made Face, aged and damage over thousands of years by wind and other surface elements. As as artist I can tell you that the level of details of the eyes, nose (nostrils), mouth, overall head features and outer design are amazing. Not only is this a work of art - but the complexity involved in erecting something on this scale is beyond words. The best evidence for the face and its artificiality is contained in the work of Mike Bara and his book Ancient Aliens on Mars 2. Bara, the co-author of Dark Mission: The Secret History of NASA, (with Richard Hoagland) reveals in stunning detail, the engineering of the massive face and evidence of an underground city, which by all evidence is still operational. -Cliff Dunning
