And David said to Ab′igail, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me! Blessed be your discretion, and blessed be you, who have kept me this day from bloodguilt and from avenging myself with my own hand! (1 Samuel 25:32-33) David was on his way to slaughter all the men associated with Nabal. He was stopped and persuaded not to take vengeance for himself by Nabal’s wife Ab′igail. How often do we get angry and consider taking matters into our own hands? As Christians, we are ordered to turn the other cheek, yet we hold grudges for years when we are offended and sometimes go so far as to extract vengeance. We are told in both Deuteronomy and in Romans that we are not to avenge ourselves, but more times than not our pride gets in the way. When you think that hurting another will somehow heal your wounds, look at Jesus on the Cross and remember the terrible price He paid for our salvation. He had every right to punish those who hurt Him, yet He asked the Father to forgive each and every one of them.
