And Now!... An Excerpt from Brainwashed: Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority by Tom Burrell - A piece of property or a dumb animal doesnt need a book! Such was the reasoning of slaveowners who not only saw no profit in slaves who could read or write, but considered the very concept a threat to their livelihoods. Frederick Douglass made it clear why an educated slave was a dangerous slave: The more I read, the more I was lead to abhor and detest my enslavers. A literate slave might challenge the very rationale for bondage. Interpreting the bible may have led the slave to discount the white preachers lessons about obliging his master. It may have exposed slaves to Jesuss true lessons of equality and humanity that contradicted the men who vanquished sinners might have inspired the slaves to righteous rebellion.
