And absolutely everyone within a production hierarchy will, for at least a moment or two, have an inherent leadership role when they become the sole master of their particular part of the performance. When Bernardo says, Whos there? at the beginning of Hamlet, the actor playing that role is the person that everyone in the audience stares at and listens to; indeed, although there may be forty actors in the cast, the entire production hinges upon the player of Bernardo at that moment. And when the console operator executes the fade to black lighting cue, he or she alone concludes the play - for everyone on stage, off stage and in the audience. It is just a simple light cue, one might think, but for the board operator it is one of many crucial - and magic - moments where she holds the entire production, and everybody in it, in her hands. ~ Robert Cohen, Working Together in the Theatre
