And another group not too fond of NASA s Asteroid Redirect Mission - TopicsExpress

And another group not too fond of NASA s Asteroid Redirect Mission - NASAs Small Bodies Assessment Group ( SBAG ) I usually side with NASA here but the quote from Administrator Bolden here talking to Dr. Steve Squyers ( of Mars Exploration Rovers fame) that ARM gives NASA the ability to show it can move an asteroid while testing solar electric propulsion, which the agency considers a key technology for future exploration. “Why not do it?” I just dont see how moving an asteroid is a cortical stepping stone to Mars? If you want to test the propulsion systems needed for the Mars flight, just do it. No need to play tag with an asteroid. Even NASA admits its about a technology demonstration and grabbing an asteroid is gravy. If it isnt the prime purpose, then why do it? Im with the SBAG on this, OsiriusRex can do this far more efficiently with less risk.
